This landscape painting had been in our family, possibly for more than two hundred years, up until 2000 when sadly it was stolen. It was believed to have belonged to James Caldwell of Linley Wood. The painting itself is oil on wood and is assumed to have been painted by the Dutch artist Jan Van Goyen (1596-1656) or possibly Pieter Molijn. Jan Van Goyen studied in the town of Haarlem with Esaias van de Velde and later on set up for business in Den Haag (The Hague). He painted a wide variety of scenes but was predominantly a landscape artist.
The painting above measures approximately 65cm wide, gilt frame, two figures sitting, two cows. Should anyone know the whereabouts of this painting, I would be very keen for it to be returned to its owners and I would be prepared to pay significantly above its market value and a reward if necessary.
