Deacons, Ewhurst, Surrey, England
Home of Anne Marsh-Caldwell (in the 1850s and 1860s?)
I know very little about Deacons except that Anne sold her Eastbury estate in June 1857 and probably moved to Deacons shortly afterwards. I understand that Deacons was the name of an old farmhouse which stood on the site of what is now Holmbury House (University College London's Mullard Space Science Laboratory) at Holmbury St Mary. It would appear that by 1870 Deacons was owned by Frederick Leveson Gower and perhaps from this time it was called Holmbury. Did Anne build what is now called Holmbury House or did Frederick Leveson Gower?
The earliest reference to Deacons is in 1367 when it was refered to as Dekens and was held by John Pryns.
I understand the census return for 1861 was as follows.
Anne Marsh Caldwell - Head - Widow - age 70 - Landed Proprietor -
Eliza L Marsh Caldwell - Daughter - Unmarried - age 42 - Proprietress of Railway Stock - Whitehall Place London.
