Hammond Alpe: An Overview
A note on the Alpe family is recorded in "Harleian Society East Anglian Pedigrees" (pages 3 & 4), a copy of which is in the Suffolk Record Office in Ipswich. This lists a family tree for the Alpe family and lists Hammond along with his ancestors, various relatives and some descendents. This information is rather limited.
Another possible reference to him is a record of a painting sold at Bonhams and Brooks of Knightbridge, 27 October 1994, lot no 171. This portrait is described "Circle of Francis Cotes A Portrait, bust length, of a Gentleman, believed to be Hamond Alpe, of Hardlingham, Norfolk, oil on panel, oval, 24.2 x 19cm." Francis Cotes lived from 1726 to 1770 so this portrait could be of Hammond Alpe or his son. If anyone out there on the internet knows the whereabouts of this portrait I would be very pleased to hear from you.
Hammond Alpe of Little Fransham subscribed to a book 'Essay Towards a Topographical History of the County of Norfolk' by Francis Blomefield, 1739.
The church of St Mary at Little Fransham as a memorial inside to Hammond Alpe 1767.
