Armorial China with the Coat of Arms of Dalton and Gage
This china would probably date to the late 1700s when it became very popular for wealthy people to order very expensive sets of china from China incorporating their family coat of arms. In this case the arms represent Dalton on the left and Gage on the right. A Mr Gage would have married a Miss Dalton and they probably ordered this china shortly after their marriage.
Page 559 of the second volume of Howard’s Chinese Armorial Porcelain informs us that this Qianlong service c.1785 was made for John Dalton of Thurnham, who in June 1774 married Mary daughter of Sir Thomas Rookwood Gage 5th Bart of Hengrave Hall.
