Miniature Portrait of an unknown Lady

Painted by the artist Gervase Spencer (1715?-1763)
Signed on the front GS 1758

A Lady, wearing cream dress with gold embroidered flowers, a white shawl draped over her shoulder, pearls tied at her neck with further pearls under a veil in her upswept dark hair.  Signed with initials and dated GS/ 1758, original gold frame with scalloped edge, the reverse with aperture glazed to reveal plaited brown hair, the whole set into shagreen case.  Oval, 40mm high.  Bonhams 24 May 2006, Lot 67.
