Miniature Portrait of an unknown Gentleman

Painted by the artist Gervase Spencer (1715?-1763)
Signed on the front GS 1758

Sir Harry Grey Bt. wearing a blue coat, matching waistcoat, black solitaire, white cravat and powdered wig worn en queue.  Enamel, signed on obverse with initials and dated GS/ 1758, gold frame, the reverse engraved with the sitter's name. Oval, 30mm. (1 3/16ins.) high.  The sitter is probably Harry Grey, 4th Earl of Stamford (1715-68). However the engraved inscription on the reverse of the frame indicates incorrectly that he was a Baronet.  Bonhams 24 May 2006, Lot 56.
