Martha Charlotte Heath: An Overview

If anyone would like to write a biography to go here I would be very pleased to hear from you.

A note from Martha's grandson Christopher Heath reads as follows:

Eva Aumuller (b. 1836 or 1837 in the Duchy of Nassau on the middle Rhine, d. in Rockhampton, QLD on 8.08.1911) and her husband J F Schmidt (b. 1826 in Crefeld, now Krefeld, d in Rockhampton on 1.07.1885) were the parents of my grandmother Martha Charlotte Heath (b. In Armidale NSW on 21.12.1864, m. George Heath in Rockhampton on 14.12.1886, d. In Thames Ditton, Surrey on 28.02.1951).

JFS, like his father, was a tinsmith. One of his children was born in Ipswich, near Brisbane,  on 3.10.1859 (as per his obituary 44 years later); but on 19.04.1861 the Armidale Express carried an advertisement for 'John F. Schmidt - Tin and Galvanised Iron Manufacturer'. That was plainly our JFS.  A later advert of 1.01. 1866 carried the slogan 'Bell Hanging and Guns repaired'.

In 1864 JFS became Armidale's 7th-ever Alderman (i.e. Town Coucillor), apparently by co- option to fill a casual vacancy. On 21.10.1866 the local Odd Fellows held a convivial supper at 10 pm, in honour of 'Brother J.F. Schmidt (late Alderman), who is on the eve of his departure from this district for Europe'.   We know from the 1890 QLD Marriage Certificate of J.F.S.'s youngest daughter Julia Augusta that she was then 21 years old, and that she had  been born (c. 1869) in Crefeld.   The QLD State archives record JFS and his wife Eva with  their 9 children (one born on the voyage)  re-entering QLD (no doubt Brisbane or its port)  as assisted immigrants on board the Lammershagen from Hamburg on 28.08.1876
