Portrait of Malachi Hodshon
Painted by the artist John Theodore Heins 1697-1756, of Norwich, Norfolk.
Full length, standing in a landscape by a pedestal with a basket of fruit, wearing a blue dress with a white apron. 124cm x 100 cm. The sitter was the son of Theodore and Margaretta Hodshon of Wandsworth. Margaretta outlived both her husband and her two sons and on her death her property passed to her husband's sister Lucy Hodshon, wife of Thomas Greame. Provenance by descent from Lucy Graeme, nee Hodshon, aunt of the sitter. Sotheby's New York 12 April 1995, Lot45.
Presumably the sitter is about 3 years old in the picture and if he was born in 1727 then this portrait was probably painted around 1730.
