Son of: Capt Duke Arthur Crofton RN (1850-1917) and Augusta Maude Lefroy (1854-1938).

2. Lt John Henry Crofton (1889-1914) known as Jack.
3. Sir Richard Marsh Crofton (1891-1955).  Prime Minister of Bahawalpur State in British India 1942 to 1948.
4. Patrick George Crofton (1899-1938).
5. Amy Dundas Crofton (1893-1975).
6. Hilda Frances Boles (nee Crofton, 1894-1943) who married Cmmd Geoffrey Coleridge Boles (1887-1976?).

Hugh was educated at Kelly College (now Mount Kelly College) in Tavistock, Devon.
He decided to become a professional soldier and attended the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, as a Gentleman Cadet.
He was commissioned as at 2nd Lieutenant, 2 March 1904 and joined the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers.  Before WWI he served in Crete, Malta.  He was in China during the revolt against the Qing Dynasty.  Later he was stationed at Triumulgherry, Secunderabad, India.

His Battalion was recalled to the UK and arrived at Avonmouth on 10 Jan 1915 and came under the command of the 87th Brigade in 29th Division. They moved to Rugby in Mar 1915 and sailed, via Egypt, landing at Cape Helles, Gallipoli, on 25 Apr 1915

He was Promoted to Lieutenant, 9 October 1906.

He was killed at Gillipoli in May 1915.  His original grave was lost but he is commemorated at Twelve Tree Copse Cemetary at Gallipoli.  He is also commemorated on the Kelly College Roll of Honour and at the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers memorial.
