Portrait of Mary Duchess of Montagu
Possibly painted by G Jervis?
This portrait hung at Linley Wood, Talke, Staffordshire, from 1848 until 1949.
It is believed to have been purchased in 1848 by James Stamford Caldwell from the sale of the Contents of Stowe House, formally the property of the Duke of Buckingham. It is recorded in the Stowe House Sale Catalogue on Tuesday 19th (or 12th) September 1848, lot 15, Duchess of Montague, sold to Caldwell for £1.7.0.
In 1925 the portrait of Mary Dutchess of Montagu was listed by Maj Gen Frederick Crofton Heath-Caldwell as hanging in the Hall of Linley Wood as follows: "Portrait of Mary 4th daughter of the great Duke of Marlborough, married second Duke of Montague, born 1689, died 1751 by G Jervis. From the Caldwell family."
This portrait was probably sold around 1949 when the Linley Wood estate was sold.
