Miniature Portrait of Mary Queen of Scots
Copy from Holbein by Bernard Lens.
This miniature was probably at Linley Wood, Talke, Staffordshire, from 1849 possibly until 1949.
It is believed to have been purchased in 1849 by James Stamford Caldwell from the sale of the Contents of Stowe House, formally the property of the Duke of Buckingham. In the Catalogue of the Miniatures from Stowe it is recorded, as being bought by Caldwell, for 7 pounds and 7 shillings, on March 15, as Lot 29 "A portrait, called Mary Queen of Scots - a beautiful copy from Holbein, by Bernard Lens".
In 1925 this miniature was not recorded by Maj Gen Frederick Crofton Heath-Caldwell on the list of the contents of Linley Wood. Also it is not recorded as being sold at Sotheby in 1949 but it is quite possible that it was sold in the local auction of the contents of Linley Wood in late 1949.
